Allergies are commonly associated with the daytime because you are likely to encounter allergens (pollen, dander, mold etc.) when you’re out and about. However, many people, especially those with nasal allergies, feel their symptoms worsen at night.
What Triggers Nighttime Symptoms?
Two common reasons your allergy symptoms may worsen at night include:
- Bedroom allergens. Your bedroom may have more allergens than you think. Pet dander, dust mites and even pollen can accumulate in the air and bedding without you realizing it.
- Pollen count. Depending on the time of year and location, pollen counts may rise at night, contributing to worsening allergens. Even if the pollen levels do not technically rise, you may notice your symptoms more at night when you don’t expect to feel them.
How Can You Manage Allergy Symptoms?
A few ways you can manage your nighttime allergy symptoms include:
- Close the windows. Pollen can fly in through the windows and settle into your bedroom. Keep the windows closed during the allergy season and rely on air conditioners for cooling.
- Clean your bedsheets. Dust mites can quickly settle into your bedsheets. Wash your bedding at least once a week and opt for hypoallergenic sheets if your allergies are severe.
- Keep pets out of the bedroom. As much as we love our furry friends, they can shed pet dander around your bedroom, exacerbating your allergies while you sleep. Give your pets regular baths and keep them out of the bedroom.
- Shower before going to bed. When you take a walk through Alexander Park, the pollen doesn’t just float in the air around you but also sticks to your clothes and hair. Showering after you return home will help keep allergens out of your bedroom.
- Elevate your head. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated will help clear nasal congestion caused by allergies.
- Take medication. Allergy medications provide short-term relief to your symptoms. You may benefit from antihistamines, decongestants, nasal corticosteroids, allergy eye drops or mast cell inhibitors.
