Earwax protects our ears in multiple ways, but it can also cause discomfort if it builds up. If your child is complaining about discomfort or itching because of earwax, here are some steps you can take.
What Earwax Does
Earwax has several helpful functions. It acts as a waterproof lining for the ear canal, protects the ear canal from germs and prevents dust, dirt and other particles from irritating the ear drum.
When Earwax Feels Uncomfortable
Most often, children’s ears do not produce excessive wax. Earwax will typically come out on its own when it is ready to be removed. You and your child should avoid sticking anything in their ears to remove the earwax. This can cause infection or impaction.
An ENT can help remove these impactions if they result in pain or trouble hearing.
Ways To Help Your Child
If your child is complaining about earwax, wiping the outside of their ear with a warm washcloth may help. Avoid using anything to poke inside of their ear.
Seek medical attention if your child experiences:
- Difficulty hearing
- Ear pain
- A blocked feeling in the ear
