More than 100 million people in the U.S. experience allergies each year. Whether you’re allergic to the pollen floating in the spring air, dust mites, pet dander, mold or all four, allergy symptoms can wreak havoc on your life.
In addition to seeking treatment from an allergy specialist, a few home remedies can help relieve allergy symptoms.
Nasal Irrigation
Nasal irrigation is an excellent home remedy to clear congestion and help relieve sinus pressure. Using a neti pot or a nasal rinse squeeze bottle, pour a saline and warm water solution through one nostril, tilting your head to drain the solution through the other side. Repeat this process with the other nostril to loosen and flush out mucus. You may feel the solution run into your throat. If this happens, spit out the mixture and do your best not to swallow it.
Make sure to use purified water and saline packets made for nasal irrigation. Home mixtures can result in infection and are best avoided. Contact your allergy or ENT specialist if you’re unsure which supplies to use.
Drink Tea
A steaming cup of tea is not only comforting but may help clear your congestion. Grab some bags of ginger, turmeric or green tea from Brooklyn Tea to help soothe your sinuses and prevent congestion from building up.
Spring Clean Your House
Cleaning your house may not provide direct relief, but it can significantly reduce your exposure to dust mites, pet dander, pollen and mold. A few cleaning tips to consider include:
- Scrub your kitchen, bathroom and basement to remove mold buildup. Remember to run your exhaust fans during and for a half hour after cooking or showering to prevent mold growth—especially important in Georgia’s humid climate.
- Sweep, mop or vacuum frequently to remove dust mites and pet dander.
- Dust your shelves, fans, lampshades, blinds and other surfaces to remove accumulated dust.
- Keep your windows closed and change your air filters regularly during pollen season.
When used in conjunction with a medical plan, home remedies for allergy relief can make a significant difference in your symptoms. Contact ENT of Georgia North today to make an appointment with one of our specialists for an allergy treatment plan.
