According to a study entitled, “Risk effects of high and low relative humidity on allergic rhinitis: Time series study,” published in the journal Environmental Research in 2019, “Both high and low RH [relative humidity] are a potential trigger for AR [allergic rhinitis] hospital outpatients in Hefei, China.”
In other words, if humidity is especially high or especially low, your allergies can be worsened.
The Effect of High Humidity
High humidity is most likely to increase the presence of allergens in your home. Because it makes the air feel warmer and moister, mold can begin to grow, especially in areas of your home that are particularly high in moisture, like your bathroom or basement.
In addition, high humidity produces more dust mites, and their waste and decaying bodies are significant triggers for many people’s allergies.
You’re most at risk of encouraging these allergens if your home’s humidity is above 50%. If you find mold or dust in your home and the air feels humid, consider investing in a dehumidifier.
The Effect of Low Humidity
If the humidity in your home is too low, allergens like mold and dust mites can dry up and begin to flake off into the air more easily.
Also, dry air will cause your nasal passages and throat to dry out, which can produce further irritation from allergens.
This can happen if your home’s humidity level falls below 30%. If your home has low humidity and you’re feeling dry, consider a humidifier.
The Ideal Humidity Level
